Sleepy Thoughts on Consequence

I think. Do you? Do you pause and question yourself, your actions, your inactions, and your thoughts? Do you allow yourself to notice what is happening in the world, and then look in the mirror and question how you're contributing to it? Do you let yourself contemplate the intentional pain and suffering that is being inflicted on persons for no other reason than power trips and hatred? Do you vote your encouragement and accept of those actions all to stay within a party line?

I think that most of us can agree that at some point in time a parent or grandparent would have said to us something along the lines of “If everybody jumps off a cliff are you going to jump to your death, too?” To me, jumping off that cliff is the equivalent of what anyone who votes for a MAGA Republican just because they're Republican is doing.

The thing is, unless a person is a vile, sickening, monster of a person, there is no way anyone can morally agree with the disgusting behavior the current president and so many of his cronies display. That's not even getting into the corruption nor the horrendous policies and dismantling of so many safety checks and positive programs for the average person. It's just going by the absolutely vile and indecent things that are constantly coming from his mouth.

There is no excuse for it. He may as well be speaking of your children, your spouse, your siblings, parents, or neighbors. He has zero respect for women, nor for persons not of a pasty white or orange skin color. He can't stand “disabled” persons nor military personnel. He says the most disgusting accusations about anyone who disagrees with him, and then he actively seeks to destroy lives if he's capable of it.

He constantly places our military in harm's way unnecessarily. He makes no apology for indiscriminate murder. He eagerly dismantled so many programs that aid others and promote education. Him and those with him have intentionally tried to erase and rewrite history. They've positioned the United States and the rest of the world in a much more precarious position due to their own greed, incompetence, and hatred.

I don't care what political party they belong to. I don't care what their religious beliefs are. I care that they gloat about hurting innocent people. I care that just about everything they do and talk about seems to be about some insane idea of payback and/or intentional harm. I care that this is what is being fed into children's minds.

I am a child of the 70s. The propaganda I devoured was Wonder Woman, The Greatest American Hero, The A-Team, Star Trek, V. They weren't perfect, but they taught me to want to be good. To try to be better. To want to help. To fight to make a positive difference for everyone. Not just myself or those I considered like me. I believed peace was possible. I believed so many positive things that would seem impossible when listening to so many of our current “leaders”.

The choices we make when voting this mid-term aren't going to make everything perfect. The problems run much deeper than that. They are, however, the difference between fighting for our children and handing their lives over to sadistic minds that would eagerly enslave anyone the world would allow them to. They don't care if your kids aren't getting nutritious food or any food at all. They're intentionally dumbing down education programs. They've turned over many safety programs. They've endangered so much life in so many ways that it is almost unfathomable.

Why would any thinking person with big hearts want to allow such people control of their lives or their childrens' lives? There's simply no excuse of ignorance any longer. We either want to stop the horrible things from happening, or we're giving it and them our seal of approval. In this case, there really is no middle ground.

Personally, I picture a world where cruel machinations are a thing of the past. Where starvation no longer happens. Where education, healthcare, and housing security are a given — not a luxury. Where wars are avoided, and we strive to understand, communicate with, and defend our wild neighbors.

We have this moment... this fundamental pinpoint in time where our choice matters far more than we can possibly wrap our minds around. So much hinges on it. Do we choose to heal together, or do we choose absolute destruction? Stark, I know. Alas, instead of being dramatic, that is the precipice we are currently standing on.

I think. I look in the mirror. I hold myself accountable for all of my choices — both good and bad. I really hope that if you're reading this, you will do the same, and you will not make excuses just to toe the party line. I hope that we will each say, “No more!” I hope that we will hold our “leaders” accountable. And I hope that we will realize the combined strength that we have. These monstrous acts are not something we have to put up with, but we do have to choose to acknowledge their existence and then do something about it.
